English & Math Placement Testing

ACCUPLACER Placement Test

All new students attending NWC will take an online math and English placement exam before arriving on campus. This exam is called the ACCUPLACER and you are required to take this exam in your home city/town. You are required to take this exam in a quiet setting, such as a classroom, library, or private study area. A proctor – a person appointed to keep watch over students during an exam – must be present when you take the exam. NWC's Intercultural Program Manager will provide you with instructions for taking the ACCUPLACER and will contact your designated proctor to arrange the exam. You must complete the exam by July 1 for fall semester.

The purpose of this exam is to assess your level of math and English. The ACCUPLACER score will determine what math and English courses you will take your first semester at NWC. Depending on your test scores, you may be required to take pre-college level English courses, pre-college level math courses, and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses. For an additional cost of $10, it is possible to retake the exam after arriving on campus. Students with high math and English SAT or ACT scores may be exempt from the placement exam.

For students who are unable to find a person to proctor the ACCUPLACER exam, or are unable to take the ACCUPLACER for other reasons, you will be able to take a placement exam upon arrival at NWC. However, you will not be registered for math or English courses until you have taken the placement exam.
