HVAC Apprenticeship Program

Opportunities in heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration repair and installation are good, especially for those who have formal training, be it through a technical school or as an apprentice.

The HVAC Apprenticeship Program at NWC CTD is a four year program that will take you from the basics to being prepared to take the Journeyman's test. You will learn from industry experts in the classroom in conjunction with employment in the HVAC field for on-the-job training while earning a living. The schooling teaches the how's and why's of refrigeration as applied to air conditioning theory, electrical theory, motors and basic electrical controls, code requirements, installation methods, and much more! 

HVAC Technicians are trained to work with heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems in both residential and commercial settings..

What is an apprenticeship: The participant is an employee of one our industry partners as they go through the necessary training to obtain the skills and competencies to reach the Journeyman status. Participants are employees of our industry partners and earn a salary. The salary will be increased based on the skills and competency level achievements.

Requirements: Typically a four year program with 576 related instruction hours (online & classroom), and requires 6,000 to 8,000 on-the-job hours to meet competency requirements. Participants must complete 144 training hours per year (this can include safety meetings)

Training will take place in 3 venues:

  • On-the-job:  HVAC competencies (skills) will be mentored and evaluated by the employer
  • Online:  Classes will be provided online for this program
  • Classroom:  Several classes will be offered in the classroom

Requirements for program entry:

  • Must be 16 or older
  • High School Diploma or GED (recommended, not required)

NOTE:

  • Participants will be expected to show up on time each day and perform the duties assigned.
  • Participants will be expected to complete their online training per the schedule that will be provided and attend all in-class sessions, unless prior approvals are given for exceptions.
