The Fulbright FLTA Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It provides young teachers from more than 50 countries who teach English as a Foreign Language the opportunity to refine their teaching skills and broaden their knowledge of American cultures and customs. The program is also designed to develop Americans鈥 knowledge of foreign cultures and more than 30 languages at hundreds of U.S. institutions of higher education.
Fulbright FLTAs apply to the program through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries. The Institute of International Education (IIE) arranges academic placement for most Fulbright FLTA nominees and supervises participants during their stay in the United States. Candidates are selected based on a variety of factors that may include academic qualifications, project feasibility, personal leadership ability, and available grant funds.
