皇家华人 will welcome its first-ever Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) and seven new international students through exchange and scholarship programs during the 2021-2022 academic year.
Hailing from Japan, FLTA Chiyomi Sekiguchi will teach Japanese 1010 in the fall and Japanese 1010 and 1020 in the spring. She will also run the Japanese club for the academic year and host several cultural programs throughout the year.
“Since I have been hoping to work and study in the United States for a long time, I am very happy to be a part of 皇家华人,” Sekiguchi said. “I would be glad if my students could build a good relationship between Japan through my classes.”
Sekiguchi, who was born and raised in Japan, became interested in languages and linguistics when she was in elementary school. Most recently, she has worked as an English teacher at a senior high school in Japan for the past six years.
Outside of teaching, she enjoys cooking, yoga, dancing, Japanese archery, musical instruments, fashion and learning Korean.
Additionally, NWC will welcome seven new international students through a variety of prestigious scholarship and exchange programs.
Students enrolling in the 2021-22 academic year include Rozina Amir Zada and Kamal Zareen of Pakistan through the International Research & Exchances Board (IREX) program; Liudmila Komisarova, Aitalina Popova, Daria Selyutina and Andrey Obrubov of Russia through the Year of Exchange in America for Russians (YEAR) program; and Leon Ekelhoff of Germany through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals program.
These highly-competitive programs aim to empower youth, create leaders, encourage students to engage with their communities, strengthen institutions and extend access to quality education.
A reception will be held to introduce Sekiguchi and the students to the campus community Wednesday, Sept. 8, from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Intercultural House, which is located at 565 College Drive in Powell.
